Digging for Oil

Jennifer Homans, “The Last Dance,” VOGUE, May 2013, p.134 on George Balanchine’s LA VALSE Ballet and dancer Tanaquile Le Clercq:

“When I was 26, I stopped dancing. Not because I stopped loving it but because I was restless. I went to college, eventually did a doctorate and became a writer and historian. But leaving dance was hard, and it was that sense of physical emotion – from the body – that I missed most. … I remember being in the library and feeling my muscles twitching to move. Partly I was addicted – to exercise, people told me, but I think it was this physical emotion. I just couldn’t give it up; it was who I was – what dancing had made me.”

“The only way I could really think was by moving.”
